18/08/2015   The passing of Sergio Cicchetti

The world of Italian race walking lost this night one of his noblest figures, discrete and prestigious: is passed away after a short hospitalization Sergio Cicchetti, who among other positions he held as Regional Chairman of GGG of region Basilicata.

Sergio Cicchetti, born in Matera 10 April 1949, was the expression of the judging in race walking in prosperous regions of southern Italy between the Adriatic and Ionian seas.

The writer remembers him always in the race walking panels, when both were at the beginning of the career of judges, since the time of Favati, Castiglioni and Zanellini.

Always extremely careful to the technical gesture, very serious and determined in the judgment, but able to communicate with young athletes  and their coaches after a disqualification and ready to propose and find solutions for the future, Sergio Cicchetti was one of the beacons of the Lucan race walking.

The last decade has judged no less than 44 national competitions in Italy, of which 10, the most important and high-level, as Chief Judge: never a controversy, readily available to all and for all !

In 2011, he passed very brilliantly exams for four-year stay in the operating panel, despite its main activity was now become the one of the regional Chairman of GGG.

He was a friend, before a race walking judge.

The world of Italian race walking lose with him a friend and a lover: a loss that leaves its mark in the small family of Italian race walking judges.

Dear Sergio, we should meet at the end of year as we met several times at seminars and conferences.

But even before in your Matera, you should lead the jury in the Italian Clubs Championships Final Silver in September 26: unfortunately you will not be there, but you will certainly be remembered with great applause.

Hello dear friend, today Italians race walking judges will be more alone!

Nicola Maggio

The funeral ceremony will be held tomorrow at 10am in the church of San Giovanni in Piazza San Biagio in Matera.
