18/03/2016   Cassino (ITA): Italian 20km road walk Championships preview

For the second year, on the streets of Cassino (FR) are scheduled Italian 20 km road walk Championships. 

In the morning of Sunday, March 20, the titles of senior, U23, U20 categories, both male and female. 

The event will also be valid as a first test of Club’s team Championships of Italy with U18 competing on 10 km and U16 in Natonal Trophy. 

In all, 256 athletes entered. In the women's 20 km, the winner will be awarded the trophy Annarita Sidoti, dedicated to the unforgettable World and European champion, who died last May 21 at only 45 years of age. 

 

On the street circuit in the course of the Republic, among men will take part in  Federico Tontodonati, tricolor of 10 km that participated at the Beijing Worlds on 20 km in the past season. Expected then Francesco Fortunato Italian champion U23 on the distance and winner of the 5000 Indoor in Ancona indoor in 19:12.00. 

Both have carried out a test in Catania Winter Trophy, held in late January: 2:37:09 for Tontodonati after 35 km, while Fortunato walked 30 km in 2:14:50. 

The Cassino race then announces the debut season of  Vito Minei, fourth at the European U23 in 2015, but will fight for the top positions even Leonardo Dei Tos, and Michele Antonelli, which this year on the 50 km has already graduated Italian champion. 

 

For women, it is expected an equally balanced challenge. Sibilla Di Vincenzo back in the race after winning the Italian indoor title, which follows up to about 20 km in Catania finished in 1:35:49. She will be opposed to a trio of youngsters like Mariavittoria Becchetti, last season first among U23 and second overall, Nicole Colombi, and Eleonora Dominici. Then Tatyana Gabellone, third in the last edition, who lives in England where at the beginning of March she got the 47:16 time trial on the 10 km of Coventry, and bronze indoor Alessia Zapparoli, in the absence of Valentina Trapletti winner in 2015.
