This year who will compete in La Coruna will have the pleasure of experiencing not only a race with the elite athletes, but also more emotion: the 30 years of Cantones de La Coruna.
Born in 1987 from an idea of Sergio Vasquez, then President of the Federacion Gallega de Atletismo which is now Honorary President, the Cantones de La Coruna represent for Spain that Sesto San Giovanni represented for Italy and Podebrady and Naumburg represent for the Czech Republic and Germany to this day, albeit in a minor key.
Today La Coruna has the privilege of being the only city in the world to have hosted all editions of the IAAF Challenge B level that was born in 2005.
That first edition (May 16, 1987) saw the arrival together of Maurizio Damilano (ITA), Ernesto Canto (MEX) and Bo Gustavsson (SWE) who completed the 10 km course in 40:19 and delighted the large audience of Cantones with the subsequent signing of autographs.
From then until June 9, 2015 when the Chinese Liu Hong in a memorable race broken the world record in the 20 km women with the time of 1:24:38, we can say, feel fear of contradiction, that La Coruna has passed all the elite of the world race walk.
It will be so again this year.
In the meantime yesterday was opened a historical photo exhibition, reminiscent of the long journey of Cantones.
Opening ceremony see the presence of local sports authorities chaired by Isidoro Hornillos President of Federacion Gallega de Atletismo and Roberto Garcia (Chief of the General Secretariat for the projection) and by Sergio Vasquez, the promoter of Cantones de la Coruna.
The exhibition is open at the ONCE Foundation based in Canton Grande 3 in La Coruna.
Thanks friends of La Coruna !
