Today they begin in Salem, Oregon (USA) the Trials for the Games of Rio de Janeiro Olympic; yesterday we have already had a preview with the two walking events with a good number of athletes at the start.
20 km men
Although the technical level is not what we are used to in European competitions, there has been an interesting race for the top three positions between John Nunn, Trevor Barron and Nick Christie.
At 5km Nick Christie was right in front of the pack (21:08:50) followed about ten seconds by Trevor Barron (21:17.70) and John Nunn (21:17.80).
Even the passage after the first half saw the trio, always led by Nick Christie (42:36.00) more or less together.
The turning point came at the 14km when Nick Christie has slowed his pace as the expert John Nunn continues on his pace 4:17/km.
At 15km they pass in this order: John Nunn (1:04:05.30), Trevor Barron (1:04:15.40) and more distanced Nick Christie (1:04:33.70).
John Nunn continues with his pace and won in 1:25:36.10 (which will be rounded to 1:25:37).
Second place went to Trevor Barron in 1:27:27.10 (rounded 1:27:28)
Bronze for Nick Christie in 1: 27:43.30 (rounded 1:27:44).
Unfortunately no one obtained the entry standard to Rio of 1:24:00
20 km women
With the entry standard set at 1:36:00, two women will be the US representatives in Rio de Janeiro: Maria Michta-Coffey who won the race in 1:33:41 and Miranda Melville, second, in 1:34:12 .
The two passed together along the 5km (22:51).
At half-race Maria Michta Coffey (46:06) he had a slight advantage over the rival (46:17), which has been consolidating in the second part of the race.
Split time at 15km: Michta-Coffey in 1:09:45 and Miranda Melville in 1:10:09.
Maria Michta-Coffey continues with her pace, after a slight decline between 16km and 18km, and won in 1:33:40.80 (which will be rounded to 1:33:41).
Second place went to Miranda Melville in 1:34:11.10 (rounded in 1:34.12).
Third place went to Katie Burnett in 1:41:12.20 (rounded 1:41:13)
