50km Olympic and World Champion Matej Toth underwent surgery last Tuesday morning on the tibia tendon in his left leg.
Matej had decided to wait until the end of the season before the surgery to correct the problem that has bothered him for the entire 2016 year. Despite the operation, he looking to 2017 where he expects to defend his world title in London.
The Olympic champion of this year in the 50km of Rio de Janeiro (and World Champion on the same distance in Beijing 2015) says with his typical smile more and not be now able to estimate the exact date of the return to full training. Now is the rehabilitation of primary importance and the rest.
"We have to be careful now to a possible infection of the wound. As for the tendons, all is well. The wound has to heal and I think I can start training in December," said Matej Toth last Friday at a meeting with journalists in Pleso (SVK).
Toth admitted that this break after the Olympic success of August for him is probably the longest of his career, but takes it positively.
"At least I will recharge my body and my head will not be more like a robot."
Together with the coach Matthias Spišiak both agree that the main and the only goal of the coming season will be the World Championships in August in London who will be the only target for 2017 of Toth.
