27/12/2016   Mexico: Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez sportswomen of the year

Mexico has begun its successes in race walking to Mexico City Olympic Games in 1968 with successes in men, until 48 years later in Rome in 2016 does not appear for a twist of fate the glorious and triumphant image of Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez Romero.

In the history of the Olympic Games the medals tricolor of Mexico are those of José Pedraza, Daniel Bautista, Ernesto Canto, Raul Gonzalez (the highest of all), Carlos Mercenario, Joel Sanchez and Bernardo Segura, but in women the closest to a medal Olympic was Graciela Mendoza.

One day a slender girl, "Lupita", came from the formation of a boxing ring, following a knee injury comes in contact with coach Juan Hernandez who recommends that the rehabilitation of doing some walking exercises.

Lupita agrees and so begins the twist of fate.

Lupita in 2015 won the leg of the IAAF Challenge in Chihuahua, Mexico (1:32:42), in Arica, Chile won the Copa Pan-Americana de Marcha (1:29:21) and in Toronto, Canada wins Pan-American Games (1:29:24).

She is no longer a meteor and begins to warm the hearts of millions of Mexicans, but strangely absent at the Beijing 2015 World Championships.

However the best is yet to come, and arrives in 2016.

On March 6, 2016 she wins in Ciudad Juarez the leg of IAAF Challenge (1:31:04).

Perhaps only those who know her, believes the real breakthrough that takes place in Rome in the first edition of the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships on May 7, 2016 when in a masterful race she arrives 2" behind who seemed unbeatable: Liu Hong.

Destroyed her personal best (1:28:48 established in Taicang on May 3, 2014 at the World Cup when she ranked 16th) with the new time of 1:26:17 (new record of NACAC Area in 20km women).

Then, the affair Higenamine, and Liu Hong loses the victory of Rome and Lupita will be the first women athlete of Mexico to win this Competition.

The world wonders how will be the race in Rio de Janeiro in the Olympic Games.

The answer is in one word: exciting.

Lupita Gonzalez and Liu Hong together with Lu Xiuzhi and Antonella Palmisano give life to a pulse-pounding final 5km that ends with the silver for Lupita separated from Liu Hong only in the last meters of the race.

Time (1:28:27) is not important; what counts is the first Olympic medal in the women's walk to Mexico.

The 2016 ends on December 27, with the double icing on the cake: the appointment to lieutenant of the Mexican Navy and the winner of the National Sports Award.

Congratulations Lupita.
