2016 U.S. Olympian Miranda Melville (Rochester, New York) clinched her second consecutive USATF 5,000m Indoor National Race Walk Championship on New Year’s Eve at Rochester Institute of Technology, breaking her own American record in the 5,000m set last year and going on to crush the 10,000m indoor record as well.
Miranda Melville, one of several impressive performances at the last event of 2016, race walked her 5,000m in 22:35.68, setting a new AR by nearly 4 seconds and beating runner-up Erin Taylor-Talcott (Oswego, New York) by over 2 minutes. In the 10,000m, Miranda Melville solidified a new indoor American record by over 4 minutes in 45:19.25.
“This was my first time doing a 10,000m on an indoor track. I did plan on going after both records and using this race as an indicator to see where I was coming out of my base training this fall,” Melville (coached by Tim Seaman) said. “It was the perfect ending to a pretty unbelievable 2016, and a great start to an exciting 2017 season ahead.”
In man race Michael Mannozzi won the men’s crown at the USATF 5K Race Walk Championships, finishing in 22:56.50.
Second place to Jonathan Hallman in 23:12.30.
Third place to David Swarts in 24.43:50.
Michael Mannozzi followed up his championship performance by taking home the men’s 10,000m title as well, crossing in 45:52.38.
Meaghan Podlaski won the junior women’s 5,000m race walk title, finishing in an impressive 25:21.16.
