03/04/2017   Merida (ESP): Alvaro Martin wins 20km

It was resolved in favor of Alvaro Martin (ESP) the 20km in Merida (ESP) which was valid for the selection of Spain for the next European Cup in Podebrady (CZE).

20km men

Alvaro Martin won the race with a good time of 1:21:11, but had to struggle hard, even from a technical point of view, for the better of Luis Alberto Amezcua.
Amezcua took second place in 1:21:18 only 7" behind the winner.
Third place to Miguel Angel Lopez in 1:22:19 at 1:08 behind the winner.

It would seem that Lopez uses these first races of the season (Lugano and Merida) as path aimed to training.

Fourth place went to Manuel Bermudez Jimenez (U23) in 1:23:26.

The other Spanish high level athlete Diego Garcia was disqualified at about 2km to go when he was fighting for a podium position.

20km women

The women's race was won by Lidia Sanchez-Puebla in 1:30:57 setting a new personal best (the previous was 1:33:58 set in Valverde El Hierro on  March 4, 2017).
The improvement of Lidia Sanchez-Puebla in this first part of the season takes on some very interesting values, and without considering the athletes of Russia, this result  is the second in the European list over the distance (it would be in eighth when considering Russian athletes) right behind Brigita Virbalyte-Dimsiene (1:30:55).

Second place to Laura Garcia Caro in 1:31:33
Third place to Maria Perez Garcia in 1:31:46
Fourth place to Amanda Cano in 1:31:50
