22/04/2017   Naumburg 2017 (GER): preview

While in Italy Sunday will take place, divided between North, Center and South, the third leg of the Race Walk Club’s Championship with the track races (with the return to the competitions of Antonella Palmisano on 10.000m track walk), another interesting weekend of walk will take place in Europe.

We focus in particular on the classic of Naumburg (GER) where the German National Championships will be held 20km for senior and 10km for U20s.

In addition to these championships there will be those for the Masters, which in Germany are always numerically interesting, and the classic 50km.

In the 20km men beyond all doubt the number one favorite is Christopher Linke (GER) who will return to race after the beautiful two-week win in Podebrady (CZE) with the new personal best of 1:18:59 which put him in second place in the European season list behind Sergey Shirobokov (1:18:25 obtained in Sochi, RUS on February 18, 2017) recently re-admitted to international competitions by the IAAF Doping Review Board.

In addition to Christopher Linke (GER) to fight for a place with Germany in the European Cup will also be

- Hagen Phole (GER): third in Podebrady in 1:21:41

- Nils Brembach (GER) who has not competed in Podebrady this year, but has a personal best of 1:20:58 obtained right at Podebrady on April 9, 2016

- Carl Dohmann (GER) who did not compete in Podebrady this year but has a personal best of 1:21:26 obtained in Rome on May 7, 2016

- Karl Junghanss (GER): fifth in Podebrady in 1:22:40 (U23)

Even the 20km women will start with an absolute favorite.

She is Emilia Lahmeyer (GER - U23) that this year has already competed two times on the 20km with interesting results:

- on March 19, 2017 in Lugano where she ranked 5th in 1:35:29

- on April 8, 2017 in Podebrady where she ranked 8th in 1:34:58 representing her new personal best

Last year, at the end of the season, on October 8, 2016, not being 20 years old, she raced for the first time in 20km, in Andernach (GER) finishing in 1:36.25.

Germany's race walk head coach, the great ex-athlete Ronald Weigel, points a lot for the Tokyo Olympic Games on a team of young names coming on the fore, and Emilia Lahmeyer is one of the candidates.

At the U20 level, the race will, as is often the case, on Leo Kopp (GER).

The young star of Germany, who in 2017 only lost the race of Lugano by Zhang Yao (CHN), has the following personal bests:

- on 10km road: 41:19 (obtained in Podebrady, CZE on April 8, 2017)

- on 10,000m track: 41:33:10 (obtained in Bydgoszcz, POL on July 23, 2016)

But the curiosity is to see whether the young talent in Berlin will be able to get a performance below 41:00.

The 50km also sees the presence of Christian Berdeja (MEX), José Leyver Ojeda (MEX), Luis Amauri Bustamante (MEX) and Lorenzo Dessì (ITA) and Stefano Mansutti (ITA).
