In the lobby of the Hotel Riazor of La Coruna, people talked a lot this weekend about race walk.
The evenings in the Galician city are always very long on Fridays and Saturdays, and sometimes athletes suffer from this pleasant contagion.
Certainly the coaches and the accompanying men with some Club president remain inveingled.
The exchange of views, particularly before an interesting contest like that of the Cantones de la Coruna, and after a good edition of the Europan Race Walking Cup being archived then days or so, are mandatory arguments to which almost no one subtracts.
These discussions are the salt and binder of the family of race walk that in various groups comment on past results, past and future personalized programs, individual and common goals.
In short, there is a moment of encounter as many who have the love for the specialty as a common adhesive.
All this while a young private autographed hunter snatches from his folder the athletes' photos, kindly asking for a signature that everyone is happy to place on a photo they might not even have been taken.
At this time of meeting sitting on the sofa with the friends of Portugal, the talk slipped over the future of the 50km in general, and then Rio Maior's "deus ex machina", Jorge Miguel, enlarged it to 50km of women.
He told us Ines Henriques would like to participate in the London 2017 World Championships not so much on the 20km (distance on which he already has the entry standard), but rather on 50km.
Unfortunately, the time obtained in her race in Porto de Mos last January 15 (4:08:26), while being the World Record for female distance, is not sufficient for the limit that was set equal to that of men (4 :06:00).
But Ines Henriques has made over 100 20km in her long career.
The last two: Saturday in La Coruna finished 4th in 1:30:44 and that of Podebrady in the Europan Cup, which ended with a disqualification, which Jorge Miguel is still unable to digest.
The numbers tell us that Ines Henriques has walked:
- 9 times under 1:30:00
- 23 times (9 + 14) under 1:31:00
- 36 times (13 + 23) under 1:32:00
- 55 times (19 + 36) under 1:33:00
Ines Henriques's international career, started on August 22, 1996 when she arrived 22nd with time of 25:17.22 in Sydney World Junior Championships, counted in Podebrady at the European Cup with 40 appearances in "major events" and now Rio Maior’s athlete would have a dream.
Ines Henriques's dream would be to be the first woman to cut the finish line of a 50km World Championship; a bit of what Erin Taylor-Talcott (USA) made of being the first woman to race in a World Cup (now IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships) in Rome 2016.
We know that his Federation will ask for a sort of wild card to the IAAF by virtue of having established the world record.
Meanwhile, we publish in the statistics section a document that Jorge Miguel has made us on the career of his athlete.
