Porto de Mos, in Leiria, will host for the second consecutive year, the Portuguese Championships of 35 and 50 km of road walk, on a one kilometer circuit, designed in the city center.
The event will be held Sunday, January 7th, starting from 9.00am.
The 35 km Championship of Portugal is newly created. Proposed by the Portuguese Federation were approved about a year and a half ago. The first edition of the race was held in 2016 (only for the men's event), with the triumph of Joao Vieira, with a time of 2:37:59, which then won again the title in 2017 (in 2:38:40) .
On January 15t, 2017 the championships for this distance took place for the first time in the women's sector with the victory of Inês Henriques, with the time of 2:50:09; then she officially continued to the end of 50km. establishing the first of his two world records on distance (4:08:26)
The Portugal 50km Men's Championship had its first edition in 1985, in Lisbon and has now reached its 33rd edition due to an interruption when the Portuguese Federation unfortunately decided not to dispute it in 2016.
In addition to the two distance races of 35km and 50km there are in the program races on 10km (for U20 men and women) and on 15km and 20km (men and women)
Ines Henriques this year decided to compete only on the 35km where she will try to improve the best national performance of Portugal (2:50:09) that she already holds.
In this race Ines Henriques will be accompanied by Sandra Silva, that last year had also competed in 35km, but this year she intends to complete the 50km, Mara Ribeiro (born in 1995) and Maria Dolores Marcos (ESP) another athlete who is finding a new space in 50km.
In the men are entered to 35km 23 athletes, but only 12 have declared they want to continue until the end of the 50km, including Gregorio Angelini (ITA) who last year had been the winner of the longest race in 4:08.22.
