The open competition of the Australian Capital Territory Championships held in Canberra between 26th and 28th January 2018 has not been tracked in the intense weekend that has just ended.
The race walk events were held on the distance of 5,000m track (men and women) during the last day on Sunday January 28, 2018 and as usual they were also open to international athletes.
5.000m men track walk
After an initial phase that saw the leadership of a threesome composed of Quentin Rew (NZL), Declan Tingay (AUS) and Evan Dunfee (CAN) were the last two athletes to set fire to the fuses and to set the pace.
In the end, Evan Dunfee (CAN) obtained the vitory in 19:36.61 in front of Declan Tingay (AUS), which was clocked in 19:38.81.
While for the first performance obtained is quite normal for a top athlete such as the Canadian, for Declan Tingay (still belonging to the U20 category) this result represents the new personal best (previous of 20:08.1, manual, obtained in Perth, AUS on March 10, 2017).
Tingay had also recorded an electronic performance of 20:11.80 in Canberra on December 2, 2016.
With this result the not yet nineteen year-old Aussie (will turn 19 on the next February 6, 2018) is approaching the U20 record of Australia (19:38.22) by Troy Sundstrom who has resisted since February 2000.
Really more than approaching the record we must say that it just touches: only 59/100 of difference.
We believe that during the rest of this year Declan Tingay will not miss this important milestone.
Third place to Quentin Rew (NZL) in 21:13.73
5.000m women track walk
Less interesting results, compared to those of men, in the female category.
Vince Simone McInnes (AUS) in 22:52.87 to the new personal best (previous of 23:08.4, manual, obtained in Melbourne on November 26, 2017).
Second place to Philippa Huse (AUS) in 24:36.99
Third place to Hannah Mison (AUS) in 28:09.12
