04/02/2018   Genova (ITA): Victories of Jin Xiangqian (CHN) in men and Qieyang Shenije (CHN) in women

This morning took place in Genoa the first stage of the Frigerio Trophy with the participation of the Chinese athletes who conclude their winter stay in San Lorenzo al Mare with this race.

The two most important races were held on the distance of 10km and were both won by representatives of China coached by Sandro Damilano.

The day was rainy and the rain affected the results quite heavily

10km men

Immediately in the lead the athletes of China to set the pace with a passage to the first km of 4:13.
The head group splits into two sections.
The first led by Jin Xiangqian (CHN), who was leading to the 5km followed a few meters by Wang Qin (CHN) and Gong Hao (CHN).
The split time to half the race is 21:12.
About 20 meters back of Gong Hao, then pass Cai Zelin (CHN), Wang Rui (CHN) and Stefano Chiesa (ITA) who yesterday got silver at the indoor in Ancona.

Jin Xiangqian increases the pace and finally detaches both Wang Qin (CHN) and Gong Hao (CHN).
From behind, however, Cai Zelin in turn increases the pace and recovers a lot of ground.
In the last 1.000m the Olympic vice-champion seems to be able to reach the team-mate leader Jin Xiangqian, but he has not reckoned with the jury's intervention: at 30 meters from the arrival he is disqualified for the sum of red card of lack of contact, with some controversy in the post-race.

Victory to Jin Xiangqian (CHN) in 40:50
Second place to Wang Qin (CHN) in 41:33
Third place to Wang Rui (CHN) in 41:38
Fourth place, and first of the Italians, to Stefano Chiesa (ITA) in 41:43

10km women

Solo of Qieyang Shenije (CHN) who led the race from the first meter.
For a few minutes try to stay with her Lu Xiuzhi (CHN), which we remember bronze in Rio de Janeiro, but at the second push of the Tibetan athlete it was clear that for the victory there is nothing left to do.

Qieyang Shenije leads at 5km with the split time of 22:48, while Lu Xiuzhi is second in 23:00.
Meanwhile, the World Champion U20, Ma Zhenxia (CHN) stopped shortly after the third kilometer for a muscle contracture, probably due to a lack of warming as consequence of the rain.

The race continues without jolts.
Victory to Qieyang Shenije (CHN) in 44:54 (with a second part of the race in 22:06).
Second place to Lu Xiuzhi (CHN) in 46:05 (with a second part of the race in 23:05).
Third place to Nicole Colombi (ITA) who managed to overcome Yang Shuqing (CHN) who in London last year had collected the bronze on 50km. The time of Nicole Colombi was 48:42, while the Chinese was clocked 49:46.
