24/05/2018   Hirooki Arai (JPN) and Liang Rui (CHN) best athletes of may 2018

For the selection of the best athletes of the month of May 2018 the races taken into consideration are only those of Taicang that have monopolized the high level of the month

So many opportunities to make good results and in choosing the best athlete of the month, Marcia dal Mondo proceeded as follows:

Men category

In this case we have considered the following performances

Date Event Venue Distance Athlete Result

5.5.2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Champioships Taicang 50km ARAI Hirooki 3:44:25
5.5.2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Champioships Taicang 50km KATSUKI Hayato 3:44:31
5.5.2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Champioships Taicang 50km MARUO Satoshi 3:44:52
7.5.2018 Chinese Grand Prix Taicang 20km ZHANG Jun 1:21:10
6.5.2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Champioships Taicang 20km IKEDA Koki 1:21.13
6.5.2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Champioships Taicang 20km WANG Kaihua 1:21:22
6.5.2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Champioships Taicang 20km STANO Massimo 1:21:33

Using the same system last month we determined the best performance in May.

Pos. Athlete Result Score points

1. ARAI Hirooki 3:44:25 1.196
2. KATSUKI Hayato 3:44:31 1.195
3. MARUO Satoshi 3:44:52 1.193
4. ZHANG Jun 1:21:10 1.166
5. IKEDA Koki 1:21.13 1.165
6. WANG Kaihua 1:21:22 1.161
7. STANO Massimo 1:21.33 1.158

This month is not a question of the athlete's name of the month, as the first three nominees have all competed in the same race and the order of arrival has also determined the score.
It is more interesting to note that in the fourth place is Zhang Jun (CHN) (very young athlete of 1998, who trains in Saluzzo with Sandro Damilano) who did not participate in the IAAF World Race Walking Team Champioships, but that the following day in the leg of the Chinese Grand Prix has recorded a time of 3" better than the winner of the Championships, Koki Ikeda (JPN). It would have been very interesting to see him compete with the others.

However, the fact that the best performance is that obtained by Hirooki Arai there is no doubt. The score he got (1.196 points) reported on 20km corresponds to a time of 1:19:47 exactly 1:23 faster than Zhang Jun (CHN) and even more (1:26) by Koki Ikeda (JPN).

In this case we have considered the following performances

Date   Event Venue Distance Athlete Result

5.5.2018   IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships Taicang 50km LIANG Rui 4:04:36
5.5.2018   IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships Taicang 50km YIN Hang 4:09:09
5.5.2018   IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships Taicang 50km TALLENT Claire 4:09:33

5.5.2018   IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships Taicang 20km QIEYANG Shenjie 1:27:06
5.5.2018   IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships Taicang 20km YANG Jiayu 1:27:22

In term of score points the results are the following:

Pos. Athlete Result Score points

1. LIANG Rui 4:04:36 1.252
2. YIN Hang 4:09:09 1.225
3. TALLENT Claire 4:09:33 1.222
4. GONZALEZ Maria Guadalupe 1:26:38 1.197
5. QIEYANG Shenjie 1:27:06 1.189
6. YANG Jiayu 1:27:22 1.184

There is no doubt that the athlete of the month should be Liang Rui (CHN), both for the very high score obtained and for the fact that she also established the new world record on distance.

But now we want to analyze the problem from another point of view and begin by making a comparison in terms of score with the 20km women, noting that the score obtained the Liang Rui of 1.252 points would correspond on 20km to a performarce of 1:23:37 that would broke the world record of Liu Hong by 1:01.

At this point we did the same simulation for both Jin Han and Claire Tallent.
For all three athletes we then compared the hypothetical results corresponding to the score resulting from the result of the 50km of Taicang with their personal best and the latest results obtained on 20km.

The following table is quite self-explanatory:

Athlete
Result
in 50km
Score
Points
Corresponding to
20km time
(A)
Personal best
in 20km
Last result
in 20km
(B)

Difference

(A) - (B)

LIANG Rui 4:04:36 1.252 1.23:37  1:28:43 1:28:50 -5:13
YIN Hang 4:09:09 1.225 1:25:06 1:31:23 1:31:23 -6:17
TALLENT Claire 4:09:33 1.222 1:25:16 1:28:53 1:31:29 -6:13

Since it is absolutely unthinkable that an athlete who obtains such a performance on 50km, also get on the fastest distance (20km) a time of more than 5 minutes higher than that corresponding to the score obtained on 50km, (over 6 minutes in the case of Yin Hang and Claire Tallent) we allow ourselves to reflect who is duty on the algorithm that produces the score in the 50km women.

In our opinion, at the moment it is very favorable to the athletes who complete the 50km.
