25/05/2018   IAAF Challenge: next stage La Coruna

The next important walking appointment is set in Europe and precisely in La Coruna where Saturday, June 2, 2018 will take place the XXXII edition of Cantones de la Coruna also this year named to Sergio Vazquez, the creator of the competition that since 1987 is an anchor in the international panorama.

Therefore, we can not fail to extend a heartfelt thanks to Sergio Vazquez also to those who have continued, with the help of the municipality of La Coruna, to keep this historic race alive: Isidoro Hornillos, current president of the Federacion Gallega de Athletics and Dolores Rojas volcanic fac-totum of this competition as well as highly respected international walking judge.

La Coruna boasts a list of names in its roll of honor that could easily compete with the Olympic Games and the World Championships.
They competed and won at La Coruna on a men's level
- Olympic champions: Maurizio Damilano, Ernesto Canto, Andrey Perlov, Daniel Plaza, Robert Korzeniowski, Valery Borchin, Jared Tallent and lastly Wang Zhen
- World champions: Mikhail Schennikov and Michele Didoni in addition to the world champions already listed as Olympic winners

At the female level, the best-known and multi-award-winning names were those of Yelena Nikolayeva (5 wins), Claudia Stef (4 wins), Liu Hong (3 victories and an important world record set in the 2015 edition with an impressive masterly contest in which the will of exceptional performance could be seen in the athlete's eyes) and Olimpiada Ivanova. Finally we like to remember the two victories in La Coruna (1996 and 1998) by poor Anna Rita Sidoti, to which the organizers of La Coruna wanted to dedicate the 2015 edition (just the world record of Liu Hong) when it was not yet extinguished the echo of his premature death.

Also this year the list of male athletes is of high standard with a strong representation of China, Japan, Ecuador, Mexico and Colombia in addition to the home athletes of Spain.
It is no less the women's competition with China, Brazil, France, Mexico, Colombia, New Zealand and Guatemala, as well as the athletes of Spain.
Unfortunately we regret the absence of athletes and athletes from Italy that in recent years had always been present.
