Behind Conesa at 8,000m are still in six: Davide Finocchietti and Aldo Andrei (ITA), Ozgur Topsakal (TUR), Lubomir Kubis (SVK), Matteo Duc (FRA), Johannes Frenzl (GER).
The international jury is looking on: Andrei, Topsakal, Kubis, Duc, Frenzl and Conesa have charged by two red cards, Finocchietti only one.
Perhaps this will be the reason (or maybe just the fact of feeling the strongest according to the time of accreditation) that the young Italian decides to force the pace.
Finocchietti covers the following lap in 1:46.01 and goes in front of the race at 8.400m in 38:18.98.
Pedro Conesa is second (38:19.10) and behind him Ozgur Topsakal (38:19.31), Aldo Andrei (38:19.56), Matteo Duc (38:19.72) and Lubomir Kubis (38:21.13). Johannes Frenzel receives the third red card and is stopped in the Penalty Area.
Great excitement at the jury's posting board while Finocchietti passes at 8.800m (40:02.45) with behind Andrei (40:02.67), Conesa (40:02.84), Topsakal (40:03.16), Duc (40: 04.99) and Kubis ( 40: 09.63) and the next lap is stopped in the Penalty Area Pedro Conesa (ESP).
There is an incandescent ending: perhaps the only certainty is that of gold for Aldo Finocchietti who has taken a certain margin of advantage and seems to be stolen towards victory.
At the bell: Finocchietti (43:24.30) in front of Topsakal (43:28.91), Andrei (43:31.42), Duc (43:31.46) and Kubis (41:43.83). Still to be decided the silver and bronze between Topsakal, Andrei and Duc, while Kubis seems to settle for fifth place. But it is not like that: Andrei forces and Duc is like a shadow and few meters after Topsakal.
At the arrival
Victory to Davide Finocchietti (ITA) in 45:01.33
Second place to Aldo Andrei (ITA) in 45:03.50
Third at the finish is Matteo Duc (FRA) in 45:03.69, but on the last lap he receives the third red card that forces him to a stop of one minute (the penalty is added to his arrival time)
So the bronze is to Ozgur Topsakal (TUR) in 45:09.22
Fourth place to Lubomir Kubis (SVK) in 45:30.59
Fifth and last of the athletes under 46:00.00 Anthimos Kelepouris (GRE) in 45:50.23
Some short technical considerations on the two boys and girls competitions
If there were still doubts about the use of the Penalty Rule, Gyor's race (after that of Taicang) has certainly dispelled them all.
Out of 44 athletes at the start (24 girls and 20 boys) only one was disqualified and for a reason other than Rule 230 (specific of race walk).
They have suffered penalties:
- 1 girl who was in third position and after the penalty (30") was classified fourth. It has benefited from an Italy high that won the bronze.
- 4 boys, of which three, four laps to the end were still fighting for the medals. They finished the race in seventh, tenth and twelfth respectively. In this case the two less noble medals were won by Italy (silver) and Turkey (bronze).
A careful jury has worked as follows:
Event | Red Cards bent knee | Red Cards contact | Total Red Cards |
| | | |
U18 girls | 4 | 12 | 16 |
U18 boys | 7 | 19 | 26 |
