IN UPDATING
There are nine athletes at the start.
Juan Manuel Cano (ARG) and Yerko Araya (CHI) are first leaders with a few meters of advantage. The pace is around 4:13/4:15km. The two are then reached after about 12 minutes of competition by Mauricio Arteaga (ECU) and a few laps later also by Henry Campos Cruz (PER).
At 4.000m Arteaga increases the pace, while Henry Campos Cruz (PER) is stopped in the Penalty Area for 2 minutes.
At 5.000m they are three ahead of the race, and the pace has increased around 4:05/4:07km and the trio is led by Juan Manuel Cano (ARG).
The race continues for several laps with the trio Cano, Araya, Arteaga to lead the test that in the meantime have dubbed David Hurtado (ECU) that however joined the group. Spaced in fourth position is Cesar Rodriguez (PER).
Shortly before mid-race David Hurtado (ECU) is also stopped in the Penalty Area and leaves the leader of the trio.
the half-way pass is 41:43 and sees Juan Manuel Cano (ARG) in the lead, followed by Araya and Arteaga.
Two laps later Cesar Rodriguez (PER) reached the trio of the leaders and went ahead to set the pace.
A few laps pass when Yerko Araya and Mauricio Arteaga increase their pace and detach a few meters Cano and Rodriguez. The pace is now around 4: 02 / km and Mauricio Arteaga (ECU) is leading the race.
When there are 15 laps Arteaga still strength the pace and earn a few meters on Araya, but reacts.
They pass in 59:47 when there are 14 laps with Arteaga always in the lead and Araya who follows him less than 5 meters.
The passage to 15km sees Mauricio Arteaga (ECU) in 1:02:12, followed by Yerko Araya (CHI) at about ten meters; further away Juan Manuel Cano (ARG).
At 9 laps to go, Yerko Araya (CHI) is stopped in the Penalty Area and at this point the fight for the most important medal seems to be over,
While for the silver Cesar Rodriguez (PER) has passed Juan Manuel Cano (ARG).
Victory to Mauricio Arteaga (ECU) in 1:22:18.16 performance that places him leader of the 2018 world list on the distance of 20.000m track walk in front of Nick Christie (USA) who obtained at Des Moins (USA) past June 21, 2018 the mark of 1:24.53.37.
Second place to the home athlete Cesar Rodriguez (PER) in 1:23:22.96 new personal best (previous of 1:25:45.52 obtained in Lima, PER on September 24, 2016).
Third place to Juan Manuel Cano (ARG) in 1.124:07.00
Fourth place to Yerko Araya (CHI) in 1:25:07.20
