06/10/2018   Rieti (ITA): Victories of Giada Traina and Nicola Lomuscio

It rains at intervals in Rieti throughout the afternoon, but the god of rain decides that the moment to show his power is that of the start of 3.000m track walk of U16 girls.

On the other hand, it often happens!

3.000m track walk U16 girls

Immediately heads the lead of the pack Giada Traina, who is the main favorite of the race, together with Eleonora Massa.
The split time to 1.000m is 4:53.9 with the Traina and Massa to lead the group that slowly crumbles.
Immediately after the passage to the first 1,000m Giada Traina forces the pace and gets an advantage of about ten meters on a group of followers composed by Eleonora Massa, Verdiana Casciotti, Giada Loreti and Martina Quartataro.
Thesplit time to 2,000m is 9:57.7

Giada Traina easily continues to lead the race, and has no difficulty in winning in 14:45.46.
Eleonora Massa is behind her and has been caught by Verdiana Casciotti who gets the second place in 14:50.12
For the bronze they plumb on the finish line in two Giada Loreti and Eleonora Massa.
The arrival jury does not have time to read the photo finish that the Chief Judge of race walk jury goes to disqualify Giada Loreti for the rule 230.4(a) (obvious non-compliance with the rule in the last 100m of the race), which also inhibits the use of penalty.
Eleonora Massa then arrives third in 14:56.67.

5.000m track walk U16 boys

The god of rain decides that the moment to give a respite when the 5.000m track walk U16 boys start.
The favorite is only one, Emiliano Brigante, but as we will see the race will have a completely different story.

They are immediately in the lead in four just following the pace of Emiliano Brigante, who is followed by Nicola Lomuscio, Diego Gianpaolo and Pietro Pio Notaristefano.
They pass to 1,000m. in 4:26.5 and then at 2,000m in 8:55.7 (4:29.2).
Always in the head Emiliano Brigante.

After 10 minutes of the race Brigante and Lomuscio force the pace and Gianpaolo breaks down and loses a few meters.
A lap after Diego Gianpaolo is stopped in the Penalty Area, while Notaristefano firmly grabs the third position.

Continue to make the pace Emiliano Brigante that passes to 3.000m in 13:22.5 (4:26.8).
The athlete of Monfalcone forces again near the 17th minute of the race and gains a few meters on Lomuscio, which however is wityh him after half a lap.
Split time at 4.000m in 17:46.6 (4:24.1).
Still a force of Brigante towards the 19th minute and still a gain of about 10 meters, but once again Lomuscio, good or bad, can return.
At the third time Brigante obtain gap is over 10 meters and Nicola Lomuscio imagines to obtaine the  silver.

But after 4880 meters of race the unexpected happens: disqualified Emiliano Brigante for four red cards.
We who, as every-one knows, do not understand much about walking, we were loss of words.
Not for the disqualification, but for the fact that those who benefited from it were certainly not better than those who suffered it.
Surely the jury will have had its good reasons and we respect them, but we do not share them.
Honestly, however, we must also say that Emiliano Brigante did not seem the athlete we knew and his coach should consider the correction of some problems in particular on the excessive length of the step that leads to a non-fluid walk.

In addition is also DQed, most likely due to a misunderstanding, for the rule 230.4(a) (obvious non-compliance with the rule in the last 100m of the race) Pietro Pio Notaristefano, who is probably the one who showed the most beautiful technical pace of the race.

At the finish line fisrt is Nicola Lomuscio in 22:06.00 (new personal best) which fate has reserved 120 meters of glory.
Second is Jacopo Farnesi in 23:51.51
Third is Claudio De Santis in 23:59.37

The jury will correctly accepts the protest of Pietro Pio Notaristefano re-admitting him in second.

So the final result is as follows:
First place to Nicola Lomuscio in 22:06.00.
Second place to Pietro Pio Notaristefano in 22:18.82
Third place to Jacopo Farnesi in 23:51.51.
