21/10/2018   Reggio Emilia: Leonardo Dei Tos Italian Champion of 50km

The ideal day for the 50km walk.
A nice circuit in the city center of Reggio Emilia (ITA), although quite hard, with slight slopes in several parts of the circuit of 2.000m which is repeated 25 times.

50km men

The most important athletes are all together to lead the group at the start.

- At 5km

Dominik Cerny (SVK) takes the lead over 24:30. Together with him Stefano Chiesa (ITA), Leonardo Dei Tos (ITA), Gregorio Angelini (ITA) and Michal Morway (SWK).

- At 10km

Dominik Cerny (SVK) has forced the pace and moved into the lead in 47:53
In second place is Gregorio Angelini (ITA) with Dominik King (GBR) in 48:21
In fourth place is Stefano Chiesa (ITA) in 48:41 together with Ruslans Smolonskis (LAT)

- Between 10 and 20km

The positions do not change among the first, but the gaps change:
Dominik Cerny (SVK) took the lead in 1:35:48
In second place is Gregorio Angelini (ITA) in 1:36:02
In third place is Stefano Chiesa (ITA) in 1:36:33
Fourth place went by Dominik King (GBR) in 1:36:42 followed by Leonardo Dei Tos (1:37:27).
At this point in the race, however, Stefano Chiesa is just burdened by two red cards (both for loss of contact).

- Between 20 and 30km

Gregorio Angelini (2:22:37) catched and passed Dominik Cerny (2:25:25) who was also passed by Leonardo dei Tos (2:25:14), but the most important fact is the DQ at 24km by Stefano Chiesa, which was the tip on which the Italian coaches were aiming for more.
It is reached by the third red card (this time for bent knee) at 9:51 and at 9:59 is disqualified.

- Between 30km and 40km

Gregorio Angelini passes in the lead in 3:10:46
Back in second position Dominik Cerny in 3:11:58
Back in third place Leonardo Dei Tos in 3:12:30
The race is all to be played from the technical point of view: Angelini and Dei Tos are burdened by a red card, while Cerny is immune.

- Last 10km

Angelini continues in the lead, but his gap on Cerny decreases.
When Cerny is reached and separated by Dei Tos three laps from the end, Angelini's detachment on Dei Tos is around 100m and a little more on Cerny.
A lap to go Angelini still has 80m ahead of Dei Tos who in turn has another 30 on Cerny.

On the last lap happens what at the start was unpredictable: one athlete at his inaugural 50km obtains the unexpected goal, that of victory.
Leonardo Dei Tos (ITA) is the new Italian champion in 3:59:48 (for him also the satisfaction of a time less than 4:00:00).
Second place for Gregorio Angelini (ITA) in 4:01:17
Third place for Dominik Cerny in 4:01:51

20km men

This race also holds a big surprise.
The eve favorite and undisputed leader of the race is disqualified at 150m from the finish line.
In fact Gianluca Picchiottino, after being passed to the
- 5km in 21:08
- 10km in 42:15 (21:07)
- 15km in 1:04:02 (21:47)
is stopped by the jury for three red cards all for loss of contact (same fate was previously reserved to Ettore Grillo and Pietro Zabbeni).

Victory for Vito di Bari in 1:28:28

10km men

Also this race there were no surprises.
The first is to have seen Davide Finocchietti at the start just back from Buenos Aires where last Monday he obtained a brilliant fourth place at Youth Olympics.
The second was given by the order of arrival that saw Davide Finocchietti and Aldo Andrei finish both in the Penalty Area for 60” and arrive later after an exciting race in 44:58

Women's competitions

50km: beautiful victory of Beatrice Foresti (ITA) not yet twenty years old in 4:52:07.
We have no certainty about it, but we believe that this result is the best result in the 2018 world for a U20.

20km senior: victory of Renic Ivana (CRO) in 1:38:33
10km U18: victory of Martina Casiraghi (ITA) in 48:57
15km U20: victory of Andrada Lavinia Lacatus (ITA) in 1:18:19

The last one is the most beautiful positive surprises of the day. The young athlete has potentials that can not be left out and that need to be refined to make them achieve that leap in quality that deserves and that is not so difficult to achieve.
