The International Grand Prix of Race Walking Cantones de La Corunna - GP Sergio Vazquez was honored Friday with the IAAF World Heritage Plate.
The president of the IAAF, Sebastian Coe, acknowledged the competition, and five more, at the IAAF meeting prior to the World Championships Cross Country Aarhus (Denmark): "When it comes to walk, there are few competitions that match the size and history of the meeting in La Coruna".
With this important distinction the Gran Premio de Marcha Cantones, has a new mention that becomes the proof of its most important features of all how they develop globally. Consequently, since the last decades is part of the circuit IAAF World Challenge reserved for competitions worldwide and most prestigious category.
A little history.
In 1987 its main deviser, the president of the Galician Federation of Athletics from 1984 to 2006, Sergio Vazquez able to join a large number of walkers with higlighted presence of the Olympic champion s Maurizio Damilano (ITA) and Ernesto Canto (MEX).
From that first edition, in the Cantones de La Coruna all the great legends of race walking around the world would have passed including other mythical names like Robert Korzeniowski, Jefferson Perez, Elena Nikolaeva, Olympiada Ivanova and Liu Hong to name just a few.
It would be precisely the latter Chinese walker, who in 2015 established in Corunna the World Record in the 20km women with the mark of 1:24:38.
This distinction, it would not be understandable without the great work and collaboration of the City Council every year commitment to this test. We can enjoy on June 8, 2019 a new chapter of this story with the presence of the best world-walkers. For that organized over a distance of 2 km. the "IV Popular Solidarity Walk" open to all citizens and in which the only requirement to take part and without running.

O Gran Premio Internacional de Marcha Atlética Cantones da Coruña – G.P. Sergio Vázquez, foi distinguido este venres pola IAAF coa Placa de Patrimonio Mundial deste deporte.
O presidente da IAAF, Sebastian Coe, recoñeceu á proba e outras cinco na Cea da Federación Internacional previa aos Campionatos do Mundo de Cros de Aarhus (Dinamarca). “Cando se trata de correr a pé, hai poucas competicións que coincidan coa talla e a historia do encontro na Coruña”
Con esta importantísima distinción o Gran Premio de Marcha Cantones, acumula unha nova mención que o converte na proba das súas características máis importante de todas cantas se desenvolven a nivel mundial. Como consecuencia delo, dende os últimos lustros forma parte do circuíto mundial Challenge IAAF reservado ás probas mundiais de máis prestixio e categoría.
Un pouco de historia.
O ano 1987 o seu principal impulsor, o presidente da Federación Galega de Atletismo dende 1984 ata 2006 Sergio Vázquez, conseguiría xuntar a un importante número de marchadores e marchadoras ó fronte dos cales se atopaba o campión olímpico Maurizio Damilano (ITA) y Ernesto Canto (MEX).
Dende aquela primeira edición, polos Cantones pasarían todas e cada unha das grandes lendas da marcha a nivel mundial entre os que se atopan nomes míticos como o propio Damilano, Robert Korzeniowski, Jefferson Pérez, Yelena Nikolayeva, Olimpiada Ivanova ou Liu Hong por citar algúns e algunhas.
Sería precisamente esta última marchadora chinesa, quen no ano 2015 establecería na Coruña o récord mundial nos 20 km. con 1:24:38.
Esta distinción, que non sería entendible sen o gran traballo e colaboración do Concello da Coruña que ano tras ano aposta por esta proba, poderase disfrutar o vindeiro día 8 de xuño cando de novo se conte ca presencia dos mellores marchadores mundiais. Para elo organizarase sobre unha distancia de 2 Km. a “IV Marcha Popular Solidaria” aberta a toda a cidadanía e na que a única esixencia e a de tomar parte sen correr.
