07/04/2019   Rio Maior (POR): Victories of Eider Arevalo and Qieyang Shenjie

The 2019 edition of the Grand Prix de Rio Maior saw the victories that were predicted on the eve of the day: in women Qieyang Shejie (CHN) and men Eider Arevalo (COL).

20km women

Qieyang Shenjie (CHN) goes immediately in front of the race.
For about 3km it is together with the others in the group, then she forces the pace.

It will no longer be reached, despite the fact that during the race he suffered from the normal problems related to women's cycles.
Her halfway split time through the race is 44:38.

For about ten kilometers, five are the chasers: Erica De Sena (BRA), Laura Garcia-Caro (ESP), Raquel Gonzalez (ESP) and Sandra Lorena Arenas (COL).
Shortly after the 15km Erica de Sena comes off and Laura Garcia-Caro also seems to come off but she resists and returns to the next lap.

Qieyang Shenjie continues undaunted to grind her pace and concludes the second part of the race at 44:23, while in the last km Inna Kashina (UKR) surprisingly exceeds the Spanish and Colombian.

A large group of athletes (about 15) leads the race for over 14km.
Towards the sixth km Eider Arevalo breaks away from about forty meters, but then after one and a half laps back into the group.

They all continue together up to about 15km when the most fatigued athletes begin to come out, including Alvaro Martin.
At 16 km in the head group they remain in seven: they are Eider Arevalo (COL), Diego Garcia (ESP), Eiki Takahashi (JPN), Caio Bonfim (BRA), Noel Ali Chama (MEX) and David Hurtado (ECU).
The latter two suffers two red cards each due to loss of contact.
In the next round the situation remains more or less the same.

When entering the 18km Arevalo forces the pace and tries to detach the others, but Garcia, Takahashi and Bonfim react.
They will not re-enter when in the next round the Colombian will forces again the pace.
