For the choice of the athlete of September 2019, although there were other minor competitions around the world, we decided to focus our choice only on the Doha 2019 World Championships.
This is not only because it is the most important track and field event of the year, but also because of the particular weather conditions in which race walk events took place. We have explored a territory unknown to date with its lights and shadows.
The calendar of the races, however, excluded from our analysis the 20km men that will certainly be part of the choice of the athlete in October 2019.
For the nominations of the best athlete of the month the criterion was quite simple, but significant: all athletes and athletes who received a medal.
Men category
We have been selected the following results
Date | Event | Venue | Distance | Athlete | Result |
| | | | | |
28.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 50km | SUZUKI Yusuke | 4:04:20 |
| | | | | |
28.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 50km | VIEIRA Joao | 4:04:59 |
| | | | | |
28.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 50km | DUNFEE Evan | 4:05:02 |
The choice this month is extremely simple as it is given precisely by the order of arrival.
The scores are striking a little, but, we want to remember, the 50km was perhaps the race that more than all the others took place in difficult conditions.
Of course the medals were the primary objective, but for many athletes the primary objective turned into being able to complete the race: time was completely secondary.
There were 28 of them. We congratulate all of them
This month we also wanted to propose the comparison of the athletes with their Season best (or more recent distance result) and their score.
Pos. | Athlete | Result | Score points | Season Best | Score points
| | | | | | |
1. | SUZUKI Yusuke (JPN) | 4:04:20 | 1.079 | 3:39:07 | 1.228
| | | | | | |
2. | VIEIRA Joao (POR) | 4:04:59 | 1.075 | 3:46:38 | 1.183
| | | | | | |
3. | DUNFEE Evan (CAN) | 4:05:02 | 1.075 | 3:48:54 | 1.169
Women category
We have been selected the following results
Date | Event | Venue | Distance | Athlete | Result |
| | | | | |
28.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 50km | LIANG Rui | 4:23:26 |
| | | | | |
28.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 50km | LI Maocuo | 4:26:40 |
| | | | | |
28.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 50km | GIORGI Eleonora Anna | 4:29:13 |
| | | | | |
29.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 20km | LIU Hong | 1:32:53 |
| | | | | |
29.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 20km | QIEYANG Shenjie | 1:33:10 |
| | | | | |
29.9.2019 | IAAF World Championships | Doha | 20km | YANG Liujing | 1:33:17 |
In the case of women the choice is much more complex. Aware of the different attribution of the score in the international tables on which we have already questioned, we have tried to find a link between "season best" of athletes and "result of Doha" and the relative scores.
But even this last comparison (Season best, or more recent result on distance, and the score obtained in Doha) did not give us the possibility of attributing the title of athlete of the month beyond all dounbt.
We therefore made the following reasoning:
- for Liu Hong the Doha victory represents the third world title (Daegu 2011, Beijing 2015 and Doha 2019). No other woman has ever managed to achieve such a goal.
- not the same for Liang Rui who only had the victory in Taicang 2018, World Race Walking Team Championships as "honor".
- it seemed right to us then to indicate as an athlete of the month of September 2019, Liu Hong
- second place to Liang Rui
- to follow the others in descending order of the score relative to the result (even if we do not fully share the attribution of the scores).
The table below shows the final data
Pos. | Athlete | Doha Result | Score points | Season Best | Score points
| | | | | | |
1. | LIU Hong (CHN) | 1:32:53 | 1.087 | 1:25:56 | 1.210
