A group of five leading athletes forms immediately: two are from Mexico (Noel Ali Chama Almazan and Brandon Bernardo Segura Zepeda) and three are from Guatemala (Jose Oswaldo Calel Sis, Jose Eduardo Ortiz Flores and José Alejandro Barrondo Xuc).
Brandon Bernardo Segura Zepeda, however, detaches himself during the second kilometer.
