18/05/2022   Alicante (ESP): Preview of the "Campeonato Iberoamericano de Atletismo"






 

 

The two walking events of the 2022 edition of the Ibero-American Athletics Championship will take place on Saturday 21 May 2022 on the track of La Nucia, Alicante (ESP).
The two races are scheduled at:
- 9:40 am: start of the men's 10,000m track walk
- 10:45 am: start of the women's 10,000m track walk

Currently twelve athletes are entered representing the following Countries: Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, Venezuela and Spain.
Among them stands out the name of Caio Bonfim (BRA) who on Monday in Madrid concluded the 10km on the road to Madrid Marcha in 39:13 with the new personal best and for the first time falling below 40:00. Bonfim boasts a personal best on the distance on  track which is a bit old since it dates back to 23.5.2009 when on the track in Blumenau (BRA) he stopped the clock in 40:40.0h.
 
But the most favorite athlete should be the leader of the host team, Alvaro Martin, who on the track boasts a personal best of 39:23.51 (established in Gijon, ESP on July 24, 2016. In this season Martin past May 7, won the University Championship of Spain in Murcia in 39:35.11 not very far from the personal best.
 
Other opponents who will complete the fight for the podium could be:
- the other home athlete, Ivan Lopez Perez with a personal best of 39:34.97 and a season best, dating back to 2021, of 39:53.00
- Cesar Rodriguez Diburga (PER) with a personal best of 39:54.6h and a season best, dating back to 2021, of 40:01.06
- the other athlete from Brazil, Matheus Gabriel De Liz Correa with a personal best of 39:56.41 established in Timbò (BRA) on 23.10.2021
 
Among these names, unless the jury deciosions, the winner and the other two medals should come out.
 
 
 
10,000m track walk women
 
Currently nine athletes are entered representing the following countries: Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, Portugal and Spain.
We will certainly see a rematch of both Rio Maior and Madrid.
In Portugal Kimberly Garcia Leon won (1:32:42 on 20km) in front of Ana Cabecinha (1:33:20), while in Madrid on 10km the Peruvian finished second in 43:37 behind Qieyang Shenjie (CHN) in 43:07, but in front of Laura Garcia-Caro Lorenzo (ESP) in 43:50.
 
The personal best of the favorites in track events are the following:
- Kimberly Garcia Leon: 42:56.97 dating back to 25.8.2018 and set in Trujillo (PER) which is also the national record of Peru on the distance.
- Laura Garcia-Caro Lorenzo: 43:50.25 dating back to 21.7.2018 and established in Getafe (ESP)
- Ana Cabecinha: 43:08.17 dating back to 19.7.2008 and established in Seixal (POR) which is also Portugal's national distance record. In the 2021 season, Cabecinha did no better than 43:54.05, while in the only track race of the 2022 season in Faro she was satisfied with a 45:03.78.
