With all the pain in the world I learn the news that Sergio Vazquez has just died.
I met him on Saturday 28 May in his wheelchair positioned on the finish line of the 35th edition of the Cantones de la Coruna.
He had a weak voice, but a very clear mind.
We hugged for almost a minute in a long hug, stroking each other's faces.
Now I learn that the latest wave of Covid 19 wanted to take it away from us, leaving us a void.
I now feel a deep sadness, uncontrollable.
His "siempre habrá una habitación libre para ti en el hotel Riazor de La Coruña" rings in my ears.
Perhaps he was the greatest race walk organizer I have ever met.
But he was certainly the most passionate and the most human.
Last year he had not been able to be present, but we had gone a group of friends (Luis Saladie, Maurizio Damilano together with myself accompanied by the President of the Galician Federation Isidoro Hornillos) to pay homage to him at his home in Fortinon not far from La Coruna.
With his usual clarity he told us about the beginnings of that beautiful adventure called "Cantones de La Coruna"
The legacy of him that he leaves us is immense.
To the family, to his wife Estrella, to his daughters and her sons, my humble personal memory and the recognition and admiration for her husband and father, my friend, teacher and a great man.
Rest in peace dear friend.

The funeral ceremony will take place tomorrow Friday at 12 noon at the San Amaro Cemetery and on Monday a Holy Mass will be celebrated at the Church of Los Capuchinos (La Coruna) at 18:00.

Con todo el dolor del mundo me entero de la noticia de que Sergio Vázquez acaba de fallecer.
Lo vi por ultima vezel sábado 28 de mayo en su silla de ruedas posicionada en la línea de meta de la 35ª edición de los Cantones de la Coruña.
Su voz era débil, pero su mente estaba muy clara.
Nos abrazamos durante casi un minuto en un largo abrazo, acariciándonos nuestas caras.
Ahora me entero que la última ola del Covid 19 nos lo ha querido quitar, dejándonos un vacío.
Ahora siento una tristeza profunda, incontrolable.
Su “siempre habrá una habitación libre para ti en el hotel Riazor de La Coruña” resuena en mis oídos.
Quizás fue el mayor organizador de marchas que he conocido.
Pero sin duda fue el más apasionado y el más humano.
El año pasado no pudo estar presente, pero habíamos ido un grupo de amigos (Luis Saladie, Maurizio Damilano junto conmigo acompañado del Presidente de la Federación Gallega Isidoro Hornillos) a rendirle homenaje en su casa de Fortiñón no lejos de La Coruña.
Con su habitual lucidez nos contó los inicios de esa hermosa aventura llamada "Cantones de La Coruña".
Su legado que nos deja es inmenso.
A la familia, a su esposa Estrella, a sus hijas y sus hijos mi humilde recuerdo personal y el reconocimiento y admiración a su esposo y padre, amigo, maestro y gran hombre.
Descansa en paz querido amigo.
