En estos momentos en los que me afloran un sinfín de emociones y vivencias compartidas con Sergio Vázquez durante décadas, pienso en la frase del dramaturgo Oscar Wilde, referida a que «cualquiera puede hacer historia, pero solo un gran hombre puede escribirla», con el legado que nos deja el ilustre lucense de la parroquia de Ombreiro, pero coruñés de adopción y que no pudo superar la enésima ola del Covid-19.

CLAVE DESDE LA FEDERACIÓN

La contribución de Sergio desde que inició en el año 1984 la presidencia de la Federación Gallega de Atletismo fue decisiva para establecer una nueva orientación, estructuración y planificación del atletismo en Galicia, tres años después de aprobarse el Estatuto de Autonomía de Galicia, en las que fueron sustituidas las federaciones provinciales por las autonómicas.

LIDERAZGO Y PREPARACIÓN

Eran tiempos difíciles y todo estaba por hacer en el deporte gallego, pero Sergio contaba con dotes de liderazgo, prestigio, integridad personal, visión de futuro, sabía trabajar en equipo, dominaba la gestión, poseía habilidades sociales, capacidad de aprendizaje, era creativo, emprendedor, con competencia para contagiar e ilusionar a otros en el proyecto, muy trabajador, entusiasta, disciplinado, autocrítico, asumía riesgos, muy constante y sabía escuchar. Con ese perfil se convirtió en un histórico dirigente deportivo.

En la última edición en mayo de este 2022 del Gran Premio Internacional de Marcha Atlética Cantones de A Coruña, reconocido como patrimonio mundial del atletismo por parte de la World Athletics, tuvimos ocasión de disfrutar de la presencia de su creador, Sergio Vázquez. Fue un regalo inesperado para todos nosotros y pude constatar, una vez más, el torrente de afectos que suscitaba.

FORMACIÓN EN VALORES

Porque somos muchas las personas que queremos a Sergio y que hoy estamos de luto, no solo por habernos dejado una impecable herencia deportiva, sino también porque tuvo una visión muy humanista del deporte, como centro de formación de valores en donde la educación, que no es incompatible con el alto rendimiento, se convierte en un elemento nuclear.

LA FAMILIA

Así lo hizo también en su vida privada, junto a Estrella, su mujer y pionera del atletismo gallego, fomentando estos valores en sus modélicos hijos: Fátima, Lucía, Chiqui, Teresa. Estela y Sergio.

Sergio's contribution since the presidency of the Galician Athletics Federation began in

LEADERSHIP AND PREPARATION

These were difficult times and everything was yet to be done in Galician sport, but Sergio

had leadership skills, prestige, personal integrity, a vision of the future, he knew how to

work in a team, he dominated management, he had social skills, learning capacity, he was

creative, enterprising, with the ability to infect and exciteothers in the project, very hard

working, enthusiastic, disciplined, self-critical, took risks, was very constant and knew how

to listen. With that profile he became a historic sports leader.

In the last edition in May 2022 of the Cantones de A Coruña International Race Walking

Grand Prix, recognized as world athletics heritage by World Athletics, we had the

opportunity to enjoy the presence of its creator, Sergio Vázquez. It was an unexpected gift

for all of us and I was able to verify, once again, the torrent of affection that it aroused.

TRAINING IN VALUES

Because there are many of us who love Sergio and today we are in mourning, not only for

having left us an impeccable sporting heritage, but also because he had a very humanistic

vision of sport, as a center for the formation of values ​​where education, which is

incompatible with high performance, it becomes a core element.

THE FAMILY

This was also done in his private life, together with Estrella, his wife and a pioneer of

Galician athletics, promoting these values ​​in his exemplary children: Fátima, Lucía, Chiqui,

Teresa, Stella and Sergio.

My recognition, admiration, gratitude, and eternal memory to Sergio, my dear friend.
