The city of Pescara (ITA) hosted the 4th edition of the U23 Mediterranean Athletics Championships on the weekend of 11 and 12 September 2022.
The organization was that of the Mediterranea Athletics Union - MAU
The two events, which given the small number of participants, took place with a single start on the beautiful course outside the Cornacchia stadium in Pescara, which hosted the Italian 35km Championship last January 16 (and some side competitions of the Club Championship). with the presence of an international jury.
20km men
Seven athletes at the start representing France, Turkey, Spain and Italy (host country)
Immediate departure in the lead of the Italian couple formed by Riccardo Orsoni and Aldo Andrei.
The two are together for about 26 minutes of the race when Riccardo Orsoni forces the pace and gains a few meters.
Behind them in third place is Mazlum Demir (TUR) with a delay of about 30”.
Even more behind Pedro Conesa (ESP) and Martin Madeline-Degy (FRA). Both, however, have an unfavourable technical situation: the Spaniard already has two red cards against him, while the French only has one.
Orsoni after 35 minutes of competition has given it a rhythm, which, although not so exciting, is not feasible for the pursuers and the gaps widen.
The situation, however, precipitates immediately after for Conesa.
He receives the third red card and is stopped by the Penalty Zone. But after he goes out, two more red cards arrive and he is disqualified.
Madeline-Degy in the meantime has received both the second and the third red card and is stopped in the Penality Zone from which he will leave two minutes later.
Orsoni continues with his pace while Andrei loses ground lap after lap.
Victory to Riccardo Orsoni (ITA) in 1:24:48
Second place to Aldo Andrei (ITA) in 1:28:54
Third place to Mazlum Demir (TUR) in 1:32:20
Fourth place to Martin Madeline-Degy (FRA) in 1:32:32
Fifth place to Jorge Lopez (ESP) in 1:38:40
20km women
Also in the sums race there are seven athletes at the start representing France, Turkey, Spain and Italy (host country)
The race is quite boring and without any twist.
The first twenty minutes see the compact group composed of Vittoria Giordani (ITA), Simona Bertini (ITA), Mireia Urrutia (ESP), Alicia Lumbreras (ESP), Gemma Moras (ESP), Marion Manaresi (FRA) who have the best time of registration (1:36:28 obtained in Podebrady, CZE on 02.04.2022) and Evin Demir (TUR).
After the 20th minute, Vittoria Giordani lengthens her pace and begins to put a groove between herself and the others that will then become unbridgeable despite the decline of the Italian in the last two laps.
In fact, Giordani will have to fight tooth and nail to resist the return of the Spanish Mireia Urrutia and she will fall to the ground exhausted immediately after arrival.
Will stop for physical problems Evin Demir (TUR)
Victory to Vittoria Giordani (ITA) in 1:40:30
Second place to Mireia Urrutia (ESP) in 1:40:58
Third place to Alicia Lumbreras (ESP) in 1:43:12 new personal best (previous of 1:44:25 obtained in Pamplona, ESP on 18.4.2021)
Fourth place to Simona Bertini (ITA) in 1:44:41
Fifth place to Marion Manaresi (FRA) in 1:46:12
