Ottimo terzo posto per Marco De Luca nella 50km di Coppa Europa, svoltasi questa mattina a Olhao (POR). Il romano delle Fiamme Gialle ha chiuso la durissima prova portoghese (condizioni estreme nel finale, con temperature prossime ai 30 gradi) in 3h50:12, in scia ai due russi Denis Nizhegorodov (il primatista del mondo e bronzo olimpico di Pechino), vincitore in 3h45.57, e Igor Erokhin, secondo in 3h49:04.
Giornata di grande coraggio per De Luca, ultimo ad arrendersi a Nizhegorodv, poco prima del trentacinquesimo chilometro, e secondo fino al passaggio del quarantacinquesimo chilometro (34 secondi di vantaggio sul rimontante Erokhin). Finale in sofferenza, ma con la gioia del bronzo individuale.
La classifica a squadre porta ancora l'Italia sul podio, seconda alle spalle della Russia, e davanti ai polacchi (per un solo punto). Tutto questo grazie all'ottimo comportamento degli altri tre azzurri in gara, a cominciare dal neocinquantista Jean Jacques Nkoloukidi, sesto con il personale di 3h54:18 (crono al di sotto del limite richiesto per la partecipazione al mondiale di Daegu), e chiudendo con i giovani Lorenzo Dessì, undicesimo in 4h03:59, e Teodorico Caporaso, dodicesimo in 4h04:11 (primato personale demolito per entrambi).
Va sottolineato, il piazzamento sul podio del trentenne Marco De Luca, il primo in una manifestazione internazionale di rilievo assoluto: per lui, ad oggi, tanti risultati di livello (sesto agli Europei di Barcellona e settimo a quelli di Goteborg, ottavo ai Mondiali di Berlino) probabilmente non sempre celebrati in maniera adeguata. Il giusto premio anche per il lavoro di Patrizio Parcesepe, che lo segue (come Nkoloukidi) da sempre.
Dopo due anni a seguito del riscontro dei dati del passaporto biologico è stato squalificato per doping il Russo Igor Erokhin, e la medaglia d'argento assegnata a Marco De Luca.
Tutti gli altri atleti hanno guadagnato una posizione.
